A scuba diver has died after getting into difficulty while diving off Radazul, on Tenerife’s east coast, on Saturday, 12 September.
The diver was reported by local media as a 45-year-old man from Gijón, in the northern Spanish region of Asturias.
The Canary Islands Government’s emergency coordination centre, CECOES 112, received a call for assistance at 10.34 am saying it had received ‘an alert reporting that a diver was in difficulty near the coast’.
Two ambulances were dispatched to the marina at Radazul, where the man was brought into port by boat, according to an official statement published on the government’s website.
‘On arriving at the scene, medical personnel attended to the casualty, who had been brought into port in a boat and was in cardiorespiratory arrest,’ the statement said, translated from Spanish. ‘They therefore performed basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation without success, and the death of the casualty, a man, was confirmed.’
Maritime rescue personnel and beach lifeguards also attended. The statement added that ‘the 112 resource coordinator activated the Local Police and the Guardia Civil, who assisted with the response’.
Radazul is a popular shore-diving location with several dive schools based around its marina.
The site has shallow areas often used for entry-level training and check dives, with deeper areas used for advanced courses and technical diving just a short distance from the beach
