A diver, reported to be a male in his 50s, has died after being recovered from the water near Eastbourne, on the south coast of the county of East Sussex, UK.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched by HM Coastguard on the afternoon of Monday, 8 July, after receiving reports of a diver in distress near the beach at Cuckmere Haven, approximately 5 miles (8km) west of Beachy Head. A lifeboat from RNLI Newhaven was also launched to support the rescue.
The diver was recovered by the Coastguard helicopter crew shortly before 3 pm and transferred to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A police spokesperson said, ‘Sussex Police were informed by HM Coastguard of a diver having been rescued from the sea off east Brighton at around 2.50pm on Monday. A man in his 50s was taken to hospital, where he was sadly pronounced deceased. His next of kin have been informed.’
‘Enquiries are ongoing to understand the full circumstances of the situation.’
