A 77-year-old man, said to be an experienced diver, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a dive off Pompano Beach in South Florida.
According to local media reports, the diver, who has not been named but who reportedly had more than 1,000 dives, was underwater with three other people when he surfaced ‘in distress’.
A spokesperson for Pompano Beach Fire Rescue said that he went into cardiac arrest after being taken back to the boat.
The boat’s crew performed CPR and used an automatic defibrillator while returning to shore to meet the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue team.
He was taken to Broward Health North hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Posting in answer to a South Florida Sun Sentinel news report on Facebook, one of the deceased man’s dive buddies said that he ‘had a wonderful dive and was enjoying himself 100% when it happened.’
