Hi! I’m Kate Jonker, an underwater photographer, freelance writer, and underwater photography coach based in Gordon’s Bay, just outside Cape Town, South Africa.
As a child, I grew up on the beach and spent many hours snorkelling, so learning to scuba dive was a natural progression for me. When my husband and I opened Indigo Scuba, our scuba diving business in 2008, I started taking photos to promote the incredible marine life we have here in Gordon’s Bay. Underwater photography soon became an obsession!
My passion lies with sharing the beauty of our oceans through photography and storytelling. I also love helping other divers with their underwater photography and hold regular online and in-person underwater photography workshops.
I have a Nikon D850 in an Isotta underwater housing and use both Inon Z240 and Supe D-Max strobes. My go-to lenses are the Nikon 105mm and 60mm macro lenses and the Nikon 8-15 circular fisheye lens.
Macro photography has a special place in my heart, and I love capturing the quirky characters of the little fish on our reefs, as well as the vibrant beauty of our many local nudibranchs.
I am a regular contributor to numerous underwater photography and diving magazines, and I serve as a judge in international underwater photography competitions. I am a qualified dive boat skipper and professional dive guide for Indigo Scuba which my husband and I own in Gordon’s Bay.
