Wrecks4all maritime archaeology training programme

The Center of Archaeology at the University of Montenegro, Podgorica, is to host a five-day training programme for budding marine archaeologists from Montenegro and Albania.

The programme, which will take place in Ulcinj, is being held in collaboration with the UNESCO International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar and will give participants the opportunity to develop skills in underwater archaeology and the digitisation of records to help preserve Adriatic wrecks.

The training is part of the Wrecks4All 2.0 project, the brainchild of maritime archaeologist Darko Kovacevic, who founded the Montenegrin Laboratory of Maritime Archaeology (LabMA) in 2022.

Wrecks4All 2.0, co-funded by the IPA South Adriatic Programme, aims to enhance regional expertise in the ‘digital documentation, preservation, and sustainable management of underwater cultural heritage’.

LabMA was the first research unit of its kind to be established in the Balkan nations, dedicated to showcasing and preserving the wrecks located off the coasts of Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina by documenting the wrecks so that they could be ‘brought to the surface’ digitally for non-diving viewers to enjoy.

The training programme will place a strong emphasis on photogrammetry, enabling attendees to create high-quality 3D models of underwater heritage sites for research, monitoring, and conservation, while applying their skills in controlled diving exercises.

The course will combine theoretical sessions with hands-on exercises, with leading experts in the field introducing participants to the fundamentals of underwater archaeology and cultural heritage management.
