A new free-to-use app, WRECKS4ALL, showcasing the wrecks of Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina has been launched by The Maritime Faculty of the Kotor University of Montenegro.
The region of the Adriatic Sea which borders the nations has a maritime history dating back millennia, from the ancient Hellenistic and Roman eras to the Second World War and modern times. Many historical events have left their traces on the bottom of the Adriatic Sea.
WRECKS4ALL showcases a number of significant wrecks in the area, including the sinking of the French destroyer Dague, sunk during the First World War near the port of Bar. Using the app’s augmented reality (AR), users can make a virtual dive to explore the wreckage as it is today.
Other notable wrecks include that of the steamer Tihany, sunk during foul weather in 1917 and considered to be the most beautiful of Montenegro’s shipwrecks; the remains of GoleÅ¡nica 91, a former Royal Yugoslav Navy torpedo ship during the First World War, seized by the Italian Navy in 1941 and sunk 10 years later for target practice; a German Stuka dive bomber; and an ancient Roman shipwreck near Scedro in Croatia.
The app was developed by the Maritime Faculty of the Kotor University of Montenegro, the Center for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship under the auspices of a project entitled: ‘Protection of underwater heritage through digitization and valorization as a novel tourist offer’ – WRECKS4ALL.
Virtual reality showrooms to display the wrecks were also opened as part of the cross-border programme of cooperation in Kotor, Mostar and Split.
