Tragedy as unconscious diver dies in Devon, UK

A male scuba diver in his 60s has reportedly died after being found unconscious on a beach near Plymouth, Devon, on the south coast of England.

Police were called to the scene on Bigbury beach at around 1pm, following reports from observers concerned about the diver’s welfare.

Lifeboats from Hope Cove, Plymouth, and Sedgewell RNLI all attended the scene, however, the diver was reportedly found to be unconscious. He was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by a Coastguard helicopter dispatched from Newquay, but was later pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘Police were notified at around 1pm on Friday 31 May to reports of a concern of welfare of a man who had been diving in waters near Plymouth. Emergency services attended the scene and the man was airlifted to hospital.’

The diver’s next of kin have been notified and police have said they are not treating the death as suspicious. No cause of death has been issued as yet.
