New Suunto Ocean dive computer and GPS sports watch

Finnish manufacturer Suunto has launched its first new dive computer model for some time with the sports-watch-style Suunto Ocean, which features in-built GPS and 95 different sports modes.

Made in Finland ‘with 100 per cent renewable energy’, Suunto says the Ocean ‘is tailored for an active lifestyle, from exploring the depths below the surface to conquering the heights above.’ The new computer has been recognised with an ISPO Award for excellence in sports technology and design.

‘This long-awaited new launch is a natural step for Suunto as it brings together all we have learned throughout our almost 90 years of equipping people for adventures,’ said Petri Lehtovirta, Suunto’s Head of Product. ‘Suunto Ocean is an ultimate device bringing together our heritage from compasses, dive computers, and outdoor watches. Designed, tested and trusted by dive and sports pros.’

Diving-wise, the Suunto Ocean has a large AMOLED display for readability and usability in all conditions, with dive modes for air and nitrox based on Suunto’s own Bühlmann 16 GF algorithm. Pairing the computer with a Suunto Tank POD before diving enables users to monitor tank pressure, gas consumption, and remaining gas time directly from their wrist. There is also an extensive selection of customisable audio and haptic vibration alarms.

Above the surface, the Suunto Ocean’s 95 sport modes cover a broad range of activities from trail running and cycling to swimming and yoga, with daily tracking for steps, calories, heart rate, sleep (including sleep stages), and recovery metrics with heart rate variability analysis.

The Ocean also features a suite of detailed outdoor offline maps that are globally available free of charge, a top-tier GNSS system for precise GPS location tracking, and a barometer for accurate altitude readings and storm alarms.

Suunto says the battery will deliver up to 60 hours of diving and 50 hours of continuous outdoor GPS tracking on a single charge, and can last up to 26 days in daily mode without needing a recharge.

Dive data is recorded in the accompanying Suunto app dive logbook, with a new route-tracking feature currently in beta mode enabling divers to view a 3D representation of their route, from start to finish, above any beyond regular depth and time measurements.

All the logs from diving to sports and every day use are stored in the same app, which has a ‘Training Zone’ for users to monitor their training load, progress, recovery and sleep analysis, while AI-based ‘Suunto Coaches’ are available to offer personalised training insights.

The Suunto Ocean is available ion three different versions – All Black, Steel Black and Sand, each of which are compatible with a wide variety of accessory straps for scuba diving, sports and everyday use.
