Insta360, the world’s best-selling 360° camera brand, has announced its new Insta360 X5 flagship action camera, which the company says ‘sets a new benchmark for what 360° cameras can achieve.’
The X5 has a 1/1.28″ sensor (144 per cent larger than the X4’s 1/2″ sensor) and a new ‘Triple AI Chip’ system, which Insta360 says delivers a ‘dramatic leap’ in image quality across all resolutions, including 8K30fps 360° video.
The X5’s lenses are crafted from a new ‘ultra-durable’, scratch-resistant form of glass, and in something of a first for the industry, the camera’s replaceable lens system enables users to swap out damaged lenses on the fly.
Further hardware upgrades include a built-in wind guard, extended 3-hour battery life, and waterproofing without a housing to 15m (49ft).
Software updates include a new ‘PureVideo’ mode, an AI-powered low-light mode which enables crisp, cinematic footage to be captured in challenging lighting conditions.
The X5 also features a brand new ‘InstaFrame Mode’ that simultaneously captures an auto-framed, ready-to-share flat video and a full 360° video, which can be fine-tuned in post-processing.
The Insta360 app has undergone something of a transformation with more intuitive editing tools, and the X5 camera pairs with the Insta360+ cloud service, making it possible to instantly share and edit 360º clips in the cloud.
A new one-tap ‘Dewarp’ button removes fisheye distortion for natural-looking footage, and a new option to one-tap export footage with zero editing or reframing has been added to complement the existing Quick Edit and AI Edit features.
