A fascinating insight into some of the UK’s protected wrecks and the volunteers that have helped to uncover their secrets

In early 2023, Historic England commissioned underwater archeological experts MSDS Marine and Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Michael Pitts to produce a film to celebrate fifty years of Protected Wreck sites and the role volunteers have played in their management.

The film draws on Pitts’ extensive film archive as well as new footage to showcase the protected wreck sites, and explore the significant contribution that diving volunteers have made on protecting the wrecks over the last fifty years.

Pitts has over 40 years experience in underwater photography and is regarded as one of Britain’s foremost underwater cameramen, having previously worked on two BBC landmark series: David Attenborough’s Private Life of Plants and Blue Planet. He is also a highly qualified commercial diver and has considerable experience working on commercial and archaeological diving projects.
