Garmin launches new quatix 8 advanced smartwatch for mariners

Garmin, one of the world’s leading marine electronics manufacturers, has announced the launch of its new quatix 8 nautical smartwatch, purpose-built for life on and off the water.

The watch has a new built-in speaker and microphone designed to make it easier to control a boat’s helm if paired with a compatible Garmin chartplotter and handle phone calls when paired with a compatible smart device.

The watch is available in two sizes – 47mm and 51mm – both of which feature a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and tough titanium bezel.

New leakproof buttons and a sensor guard protect the watch from the elements and the battery can last up to 16 days on the 47mm watch and 29 days on the 51mm without a recharge.

‘From the open water to the office and everywhere in between, quatix 8 is equipped with premium features that support those who love the water through every part of their day,’ said Susan Lyman, Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing.

‘Reliable marine tools give mariners the control and awareness they need while boating, sailing or fishing. Then once it’s time to dock, the watch’s robust collection of wellness features and fitness activities can help them stay on top of their health and pursue their passions.’

Garmin describes the quatix 8 as being ‘built to withstand the toughest conditions without sacrificing style’, and says it has been tested to US Military Standards for thermal and shock resistance.

The new watch includes a new ambient light sensor to ensure the screen is easy to read even in harsh sunlight, and a built-in LED flashlight provides convenient illumination with multiple light modes and a red safety light to help preserve night vision.

For those who like to spend time both above and below the water, the Garmin quatix 8 with its new leakproof metal buttons and sensor guard is depth-rated up to 40 metres, making it suitable for recreational scuba diving and freediving.

At the surface, quatix 8 enables mariners to monitor conditions including water depth, speed, heading and wind from their watch, with preloaded boating and sailing apps making it easier to track time on the water, receive tide change and anchor drag alerts.

Competitive boaters will enjoy the watch’s tack assist feature, race start guidance and regatta timer, and as with all of Garmin’s top watches, the quatix 8 includes Garmin’s wide-ranging suite of health, fitness, navigation and connected features.
