A freediver has died after being bitten by a great white shark while spearfishing near Rottnest Island, Western Australia.
Steven Mattaboni, 38, a surveyor and father of two from Perth, was mauled by the shark just before 10 am on Saturday, 16 May, while diving near Horseshoe Reef, around 1km offshore.
According to local police, Mattaboni had been participating in a small club spearfishing competition with friends and was approximately 20 metres from his dive boat when he was bitten on the legs.
Mattaboni was transported to Geordie Bay jetty on Rottnest Island, where paramedics attempted to resuscitate him, but he later died from his injuries.
Authorities believe the shark involved was a 4-5 metre great white. Fisheries patrol vessels later continued monitoring the area after another large white shark was reportedly sighted nearby.
Although great white sharks are known to be present in the area, the incident is believed to be the first fatal shark bite in the waters around Rottnest Island since 2011.
Mattaboni was the secretary of Bluewater Freedivers of Western Australia and was described by fellow divers as highly experienced and well-respected within the local spearfishing community.
In a statement, his wife Shirene Mattaboni said: ‘Our hearts are irrevocably broken by the loss of Steven, known affectionately to his mates as Mattas.
‘Steven was a devoted father to our two beautiful daughters – one who turns three next month and our four-month-old baby.
‘An avid fisherman and spearfisherman, who lived and breathed the ocean, he was always in tune with the sea.
‘He was fiercely loyal, endlessly generous, and the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back. The world has lost a truly one-of-a-kind gentleman, and our daughters have lost an incredible father far too soon.’
Bluewater Freedivers of Western Australia also paid tribute in a public statement.
‘We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Steven Mattaboni, a premiership player and much-loved friend to many within our club community,’ the club said.
‘Mattas was one of the most genuine people you could meet. He had a smile and presence that could light up a room, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
‘Our thoughts and love are with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time, especially his wife Shirene and their two young daughters.’
