Shearwater Research has announced that the Shearwater Jetpack for Avelo diving has received CE marking, allowing the equipment to be sold in Europe.

Rather than the traditional tank-and-BCD used by divers, the Avelo System controls buoyancy by adding or removing water from its specialised Hydrotank cylinder, while the Jetpack carries the cylinder and houses the battery-powered water pump

While Avelo developed the original equipment and training system, Shearwater became the Jetpack’s lead manufacturer following the announcement of a partnership between the two companies in November 2024.

As part of its CE marking, the Jetpack has been certified as compliant with EN 250, the European standard for open-circuit scuba. This is particularly significant as the Jetpack includes an air integration transmitter, which sends cylinder pressure information to compatible Shearwater dive computers running in Avelo Mode.

‘Achieving CE marking is an important milestone for the Shearwater Jetpack and for Avelo diving,’ said Jason Leggatt, CEO of Shearwater Research. ‘Europe has a long and significant history in diving, and we are excited to make the Jetpack available to European divers, instructors, dive centres and retailers.’

‘Avelo was designed to reduce the weight of scuba gear and provide a new approach to buoyancy, and our focus has always included developing the training and education needed to support that approach,’ said Aviad Cahana, CEO of Avelo Labs.

‘With Shearwater leading Jetpack manufacturing and CE marking now achieved, we have an important opportunity to bring Avelo to more divers across Europe.’

Shearwater says that the Jetpack represents an expansion of the company’s role in scuba diving equipment beyond its well-established portfolio of dive computers and rebreather electronics.

‘Bringing innovative equipment to a regulated market requires a strong commitment to engineering, manufacturing and quality,’ said Leggatt.

‘Completing the CE marking process, including EN 250 conformity, is an important achievement for the Jetpack and enables us to bring it to a much broader community of divers.’

Avelo also launched its Avelo Diver entry-level course in August 2026, for people with no previous diving experience.

According to the release, the course meets the ISO 24801-2 autonomous diver training standard. Graduates are qualified to dive with a buddy without direct professional supervision to a maximum depth of 18 metres (60ft), in environments and conditions comparable to those experienced during training.
