Canadian dive computer specialist Shearwater Research has announced a partnership with Avelo Labs, a training organisation based around an innovative new scuba diving technology which aims to ‘revolutionise’ how divers control their buoyancy underwater.

organization and dive technology company renowned for its revolutionary approach to buoyancy control and advanced dive analytics. This collaboration aims to drive the advancement of diving systems and human performance, uniting Shearwater’s technical expertise with Avelo’s groundbreaking innovation.

The Avelo System is currently gaining traction in the recreational scuba diving market, with training outfits located – at the time of writing – in 22 locations in Australia, Bonaire, the US and Spain.

Avelo eliminates the need for BCDs and weight belts by using water from the surroundings to control a diver’s buoyancy. The system is based around Avelo’s battery-powered ‘Hydrotank’, a scuba tank with a flexible inner bladder into which compressed air or water can be pumped.

Whereas the buoyancy characteristics of a BCD are changed with even minor variations in depth, requiring air to be pumped in and out of the bladder, Avelo claims its system is much less sensitive to ambient pressure changes as it uses water, pumped into or purged from the Hydrotank to control the system’s buoyancy.

This allows divers more control over their position in the water using natural breathing techniques, without having to constantly inflate and deflate their BCDs – which Shearwater and Avelo call a ‘paradigm-shifting scuba diving experience.’

Shearwater will be adding Avelo Mode to its flagship Peregrine TX dive computer, following on from its addition to the Teric earlier this year. Avelo Mode will be added to more of Shearwater air-integrated dive computers later in December.

Shearwater says this will ensure ‘a seamless integration with the Avelo System and deliver precise gas-time management, which is critical to safety and the overall dive experience,’ and says the companies plan to expand upon the collaboration in the future.

‘For years, Shearwater has been dedicated to advancing engineered dive technology, particularly for technical and rebreather divers who push the limits of human potential underwater,’ said Jason Leggatt, CEO of Shearwater Research.

‘Our partnership with Avelo Labs marks an important milestone in leveraging two decades of expertise to explore new frontiers in underwater electronics for a broader diving community.

The Avelo System is an excellent match with Shearwater’s legacy of powerful, simple, and reliable technology. I believe this collaboration will result in new solutions that will encourage greater participation in diving, cultivating a lifelong connection to exploring and engaging with the underwater world with passion.’

‘Shearwater’s proven excellence and technical leadership in the dive industry brings new opportunities to extend our vision for advanced scuba systems,’ said Avelo Labs CEO, Aviad Cahana. ‘Working with Shearwater already is allowing Avelo divers worldwide to become more efficient and enjoy longer dive times.

‘Together, we’re building the future of diving, one that redefines what divers can expect in terms of user experience and performance.’
