Featured Photographer: Frank Doll

My name is Frank Doll, I’m 55 years old and live in Rheinbach, a small town in Germany. I started diving in 1998 in my hometown of Berlin. The little lake was cold and dark and I was just killing time with my brother-in-law during a family visit, but I got addicted to diving.

Since then, I’ve done about 1500 dives all over the world, most of them with my wife. In countries such as Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Mexico, Honduras, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands Antilles, Oman, Cape Verde, Mauritius, the Maldives, and Thailand.

It took a few years before I combined diving with photography. I started UW photography about 10 years ago because I think it is very important to know the behaviour of the animals and the symbioses before you start with photography.

My first camera was a simple compact camera in a manufacturer’s housing. I tried other models, but during the years my ambition and passion grew. I decided to buy a Canon EOS 5 D Mark 2 with various lenses in a Seacam housing with two Seacam flashes. In my opinion, this uw-camera combination is the best opportunity to develop myself as a photographer.

I am glad that travelling is possible again and hope that all people will have the chance to travel again soon.
