dive travel awards 2021 best scuba diving centres and resorts

More than 750 different establishments were voted by readers as the best scuba diving resorts or dive centres to visit in 2022. Here’s a closer look at the Top 10, with some of the best comments made by readers during the vote

Elite Diving Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

www.elite-diving.com
dive travel awards 2021 best scuba diving centre elite diving sharm el sheikh

Taking the 2021 DIVE Travel Awards crown this year is Elite Diving, a small, multi-award-winning family run-business based in Sharm El Sheikh, founded in 2005 by Alun and Moyra Evans, and now supported by their son, Gwyn (aka ‘G’) and his wife Valeria (aka ‘V’). Elite placed third in the 2020 DIVE Travel Awards, and we remarked at the time that it was a moment of ‘great significance’ for a small business to have pulled through the problems that Sharm has faced since 2015, even before the stranglehold of pandemic travel restrictions. Where other, larger, centres have been forced to close their doors – some of them forever – Elite Diving’s loyal customer base has seen them not only continue as one of Sharm’s best-loved dive centres, but crowned as well-deserved winners of the DIVE Travel Awards.

Elite offers both PADI and BSAC training, and runs daily boat trips through all of Sharm’s most popular dive spots including Ras Mohammed National Park, the Strait of Tiran and all the local dive sites in between. Trips to the legendary wreck of the Thistlegorm and also the popular Dunraven are also available. Divers can select from a range of four- and five-star accommodation options depending on budget and requirements, with a pickup and transfer service included.

TOP DIVES: SS Thistlegorm is one of the best wreck dives in the world, filled with Second World War trucks, motorcycles and munitions that have been remarkably well preserved beneath the waves. The twin pinnacles of Shark and Yolanda are probably the most well-known (and most regularly visited) reefs in Sharm, but for very good reasons, and the island reefs of the Straits of Tiran are essential, especially if you enjoy drift diving.

The community they have created is unlike any other.

Papua Explorers Dive Resort Raja Ampat, Indonesia

www.papuaexplorers.com
dive travel awards 2021 best scuba diving centre or resort 2nd place papua explorers

Papua Explorers were 2019 winners of the Best Dive Centre or Resort category, sharing top spot that year with its liveaboard, Coralia, which has taken first place in the Best Liveaboard category for the second time in 2021. Papua Explorers is a small eco-resort based on Gam Island in the Dampier Strait of Raja Ampat and – judging by the number of votes it has received each year – is very well-supported by its customer base, especially valuable during the difficult times of the last few years.

The resort was founded not just as an environmentally conscious scuba diving operation, but one which works together with local communities to minimise the impact of environmentally damaging activities and train the indigenous population in roles that will bring them better incomes, and provide a better and more sustainable environment for the development of the local biodiversity. The resort is constructed on stilts over the water using natural local materials and traditional Papuan building techniques, with 12 ‘Deluxe Water Bungalows’, two ‘Superior Water Bungalows’ and one Family Villa available, plus a restaurant and spa, all designed to be as eco-friendly as possible.

TOP DIVES: Most of the Raja Ampat’s dive sites will satisfy even the most demanding of diver. Cape Kri, together with Mike’s PointMioskon and Blue Magic – among others – are some of the most biodiverse reefs on the planet. There is very little that can’t be found in Raja Ampat, from tiny macro magic to giant oceanic manta rays.

Voter Comments:

Now three times with Papua Explorers. First and second was wonderful with the Indonesian staff and dive guides and owners. Sharing beautiful moments of enormous value. From the hotel to the diving, all was top quality.

Scuba Junkie Sipadan Sipadan/Mabul, Malaysia

www.scuba-junkie.com
dive travel awards 2021 best scuba diving centre 3rd place scuba junkie sipadan

Scuba Junkie took first place in the 2020 DIVE Travel Awards, with its Sipadan, Komodo and Penida centres each collecting so many votes that we had to combine them together to stop them blocking out the Top Three! Scuba Junkie Komodo placed in ninth this year, and although the Nusa Penida branch which shared the 2020 award fell just short of the Top Ten this year, it still retained a solid position within the overall Top 25. Scuba Junkie Sipadan was the first of its dive centres, since when it has grown into its own resort.

Scuba Junkie first opened its doors in Sipadan, Malaysia in 2004, quickly establishing a name for itself as an environmentally aware scuba diving operation. Since then, Scuba Junkie Sipadan has grown into a resort with accommodation based on the nearby island of Mabul. Scuba Junkie also has centres in the Malaysian capital of Kota Kinabalu, and Sangalaki, Komodo Nusa Penida in Indonesia. All of Scuba Junkie’s individual centres received nominations, but this year it was the Sipadan branch that ran away with the award for third place.

TOP DIVES: As the name Barracuda Point suggests, barracuda gather here in their thousands at the end of a channel through which strong currents prevail and in which grey reef sharks like to gather to wait for their lunch to come to them. Plenty of macro life can be found amongst the vibrant coral, and turtles are often seen in numbers – as they are almost everywhere around Sipadan

Voter Comments:

From the first minute to the last, in and out of the water; the team at Scuba Junkie Mabul make everything wonderful.
– RM, Australia

Best school and resort ever. Beautiful resort, great food, amazing diving, very friendly and professional staff.
– MC, Netherlands

I got my open water at Scuba Junkie Sipadan. I’ve since been certified at a number of other dive resorts and nothing has compared to their level of instruction and offerings. I can’t wait to go back
.– JK, USA

Scuba Junkie Sipadan offers super high-quality service with environmental sustainability at its heart throughout the whole resort (food options, plastics, local projects). The dive guides take their job seriously and are the most professional ones I have met. Overall, 5* experience and quality.
– MN, Portugal

Total experience – Diving spot, diving gear, dive guide, stay, service and foods.. all awesome…

Dive Ninjas Expeditions Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

www.diveninjaexpeditions.com
dive travel awards 2021 top 10 dive ninja

Dive Ninja Expeditions, based in Cabo San Lucas in Baja California, Mexico, was built with sustainability and conservation as the core pillars of its business. Not only was the centre the first and only Project Aware 100% AWARE PADI 5 Star Dive Center in the  Baja California peninsula, but the team has dedicated itself to conservation both underwater and at the surface, having completely removed single-use plastics from its shop and dive operations.

Cabo San Lucas lies at the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. The meeting of these two bodies of water creates an incredible environment for scuba diving, boasting thousands of species of invertebrates, more than 900 species of fish, and a multitude of marine mammals. Multiple species of shark migrate through the area each year, as do humpback whales, bait balls, and huge schools of mobula rays.

TOP DIVES: Located 10 miles offshore, Gordo Banks is a seamount rising up from the depths to a plateau approximately 33-45m deep. Experienced divers can spot pelagic species here in numbers, including schools of jacks, tuna, pelagic stingrays, mantas, mobulas, silky sharks and hammerheads. Humpback whales are often spotted during the December – April migratory season. Less experienced divers will find much to enjoy in the Cabo San Lucas Marine Park, including a chance to get up close and personal with the friendly sea lions at Lands End.

Voter Comments:

Dive ninja expeditions is the best diving centre I’ve been diving with, the best experiences in and out of the water, the best staff and divers are there.
– KM, La Paz, Mexico

Dive ninja Expeditions Always amazes me, first class! Experienced people that make you feel like family. It’s not your normal scuba dive trip. it’s definitely a wonderful expedition.
– CK, USA

I have been on numerous trips a Dive Ninja they are the best most fun and care so much about the environment and the sea. They always bring on educational workshops advocates to teach divers about wildlife.
– DW, USA

Jay Clue has quickly become an amazing ambassador for the ocean and its protection. Supporting him and his team and their efforts has been a great experience.-KM, USA

Dive ninjas is easily the best dive center for me. They only take out the small groups and their dive masters are top notch. Their focus on conservation and involvement with the local community really sets them apart from every dive center I have been to. They ran many educational zoom seminars during the covid19 lockdown. Truly a class above the rest.
– JLR, Canada

The ninjas are another level. Safe, efficient, knowledgable and above all else, so much fun! They’ve become like a family to me and if I could avoid it, I’d never dive with another group again.

B&J Diving Centre, Pulau Tioman, Malaysia

www.divetioman.com
dive travel awards 2021 top 10 b& j tioman

B&J Diving Centre was established in 1986, originally known as ‘Ben’s Diving Centre’, and is now one of the largest dive centres in Malaysia and a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre. The associated Tioman Dive Resort was built and developed between 2010 and 2014, and today offers a range of rooms from luxury accommodations to budget dormitory rooms, plus the B&J Beach Bar for post-dive relaxation.

B&J places high value on protecting the local environment and is accredited as a GoEco operator, Reef-World Foundation GreenFins Member and PADI AWARE award winner. The dive centre hosts regular clean up activities and operates with a strict no-glove and no-touch policy while diving.  On an operational level, B&J is the only dive centre on Tioman that provides Nitrox, Oxygen and Helium tank fill, and offers both technical and CCR dive courses.

TOP DIVES: B&J is the only centre to dive at North Point, which means it remains a pristine site on the northern tip of Tioman Island. Filled with hard and soft coral-covered rocks, the site is home to a collection of huge moray eels, napoleon fish and turtles, plus one of the most diverse populations of nudibranchs in Malaysia.

Voter Comments:

High-class facilities, that are able to provide for the whole family. They have great safety procedures and are very well organised. The best part about this dive centre is that they make you feel welcome, and part of the family at every stage of your trip, so you feel very comfortable taking full advantage of their private bar, social area and dive centre throughout your whole stay, rather than just arriving for dives. This creates a great atmosphere, and intimately, an incredible experience! Most people I meet here are returning visitors.
– JM, UK

It’s had perfect hospitality, easy to communicate and arrange logistics and schedules, experienced and kind staffs and divers. Good maintenance of equipment, boats, nice accommodation. Jovial environment
– VT, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

I did my scuba diving license there a couple of years back and it was great! Faizal is a great person and the island is just stunning. Plenty of fish :D
– PR, Germany

Great staff, fantastic location in the middle of a marine park and a great experience all round
– CD, Australia

Great place to spend a few days learning to dive on a budget. All training was in the crystal-clear bay waters, never set foot in a pool. The surrounding reefs have an amazing diversity of fish, turtles, octopuses, and other sea life. Could not have been happier with the diving instructors, resort staff, or overall experience.
– TZ, USA

My alma matter: thanks for the introduction to scuba diving. Dove all around the world since then but Malaysia and B&J Dive Resort still hold a special place in my heart! Way to have fun while diving and staying safe!
– TK, Canada

B&J Dive Center is for me the best all over there. Good dives, you feel already safe, family atmosphere, good teaching! I love it!!!!
– SD, Croatia

Scuba Seekers, Dahab, Egypt

www.scubaseekers.com
dive travel awards 2021 top 10 scuba seekers

A new entry into the DIVE Travel Awards in 2020, Scuba Seekers, based in Dahab, Egypt has a technical focus but offers a very broad range of both recreational and technical diving programmes, in one of the best places in the world to learn both disciplines.

Scuba Seekers is both a PADI Instructor Development Centre and a TDI Instructor Training centre, meaning they can offer entry-level to instructor education in both recreational and technical diving. Scuba Seekers is also a certified GUE (Global Underwater Explorers) centre, from GUE ‘fundies’ to GUE CCR Tech. While there is no on-site accommodation, arrangements can be made with a number of local hotels through the dive centre, and Dahab, a super-chilled location 80km north of Sharm El Sheikh, has plenty of options for travellers wanting 5-star luxury or those on a tighter budget.

TOP DIVESThe Blue Hole is a perfect tech diving arena but also makes a great recreational dive, especially if approached along the outside of the reef wall from El Bells. The Canyon is another Dahab favourite and exploring the seagrass meadows around the Lighthouse can be extremely rewarding.

Voter Comments:

Scuba Seekers is the place where I learned how to dive more than 14 years ago. And I have never thought of changing them. The founder and my instructor is a very professional person who puts safety on top of everything. All of the team are very professional and each time they make the diving experience exceptional.
– HM, Cairo, Egypt

Perfectly organized, top equipment, excellent professional instructors and dive guides.
– PV, Italy

Scuba Seekers never miss a trick. Rental equipment is always extremely well maintained, the instructors and dive masters are consummate professionals, and the day’s diving activities are always organised perfectly. Easily the most professional dive centre I’ve dived with.
– SW, New Zealand

Scuba Seekers for sure just because of the well-trained staff and the facilities they have on offer. Also, you can do PADI/TDI/IANTD/GUE with them and the quality of training is par excellence. The owner Sameh Is trained and dives with the best divers in the world like Jarrod Jablonski. It’s a no-brainer, they are the best.
– T, USA

Scuba Seekers, Dahab, Egypt feels like home. You wouldn’t want to go anywhere else even after the dives. Every single person you meet in the dive centre makes you feel at home and want to come back for your next holiday. Very professional, helps you plan your dive holiday, maintain your gear, get sincere advice and above all enjoy a safe dive. Paying back to the local society by running a weekly cleanup and trash sorting dive and campaigns to educate the community about marine life and conservation.

Siladen Resort & Spa, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

www.siladen.com
dive travel awards 2021 siladen resort & spa

Siladen Resort & Spa is one of the most successful operators in the DIVE Travel Awards, having won the accolade in both 2017 and 2018 and placing second in 2019. Located on Pulau Siladen, a lush tropical island in the heart of the Bunaken National Marine Park, the eco-friendly 5 Star PADI Dive Resort opened in 2003, with an emphasis on protecting the Marine Park and the local environment.

Bunaken’s extensive National Park covers a total area of over 890 sq km and is home to 390 different species of corals, much of which can be enjoyed on one of the spectacular wall dives for which the area is famous. The park is also known for its rich macro life, and Siladen organises regular muck diving trips to Manado Bay and Bangka Island.

Siladen’s secluded accommodations offer all amenities, with open-air showers and sunbeds overlooking the calm seas. The resort’s traditional style wooden boats are spacious, have all the necessary safety facilities and are particularly suited to photographers.TOP DIVES: Located inside the crescent of Bunaken Island, Lekuan is described as the ‘signature’ dive of Bunaken Marine Park. Stretching for several kilometres, Lekuan is made up of four different dive sites, Lekuan I, II and III, and Pygmy. Encounters with green and hawksbill turtles are almost guaranteed, often more than ten in a single dive. Tuna, Napoleon wrasse, eagle rays and reef sharks are often spotted cruising along the coral and sponge encrusted wall, and plenty of macro species can be found in the nooks. Currents can be strong, but there is usually a place to shelter if necessary.

Uepi Island Resort, Solomon Islands

www.uepi.com

Uepi Island Resort is located on a small tropical island perched on the edge of the longest lagoon in the world. Six bungalows, two units and two guest rooms offer clean and comfortable accommodation with a twenty-six-bed maximum capacity. all the rooms are spaced throughout the resort’s tropical gardens for privacy. Most of the dive sites are only a few minutes away from the dive centre, dived either from the shore or just a short boat ride away.

The Solomon Islands remains one of the last scuba diving wildernesses, with incredible biodiversity in terms of both the reefs and the critters that inhabit them. The topography varies from the shallow and sheltered coral gardens of the lagoon to vertical drop-offs in an area known as The Slot, stretching 2,000m to the seafloor and where passing pelagic species can be spotted. Uepi island resort is an SSI dive centre and offers the full range of training programmes up to divemaster level.

MUST SEE: Uepi Point and its near vertical reef corner is coated profusely with corals – especially gorgonian fans and colourful spiky soft corals. At 30m a coral peninsula juts out into the deep blue, providing the stage for a spectacular procession of pelagics which turn to hunting and feeding at certain points during the tide, creating a lot of exciting underwater action. Giant trevally, mackerel, wahoo, rainbow runner, big-eye jacks, dogtooth & smaller tuna, sharks, barracuda and others cruise relentlessly back and forth waiting for inattentive smaller fish to become their next meal. The explosive sounds and sights of a large number of fish all taking evasive action at the same time fill the water. Families of garden eels, arrays of colourful gobies and a diverse collection of invertebrate life inhabit the sand patches of the shallows.

Voter Comments:

Amazing diving right off the shore in such a stunning location, who could ask for more.
– JZ, Australia

Wonderful choice of dive sites. Reefs, sharks, deep or shallow, manta rays, shipwrecks …. It’s got it all plus beautiful food & accommodation. Cultural inclusions are important as well. They help their local village & have provided a hospital on a nearby island. Eco friendly.
– SG, Australia

A wonderful array of corals, fish and sea creatures. A huge variety of dive sites. Very friendly and accommodating staff. A special experience
– JC, Australia

Uepi Island has it all. Best house reef, marine reserve and marine diversity, all kinds of pelagics, eco-resort, amazing inland views and great food and hosts.

So many great places – Indonesia, Seychelles, Philippines, Mexico, South Africa, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Australia …. so many great experiences …but at the end of the day, some places just speak to your soul. Uepi was that place to me.

Scuba Junkie Komodo, Indonesia

www.scubajunkiekomodo.com

Built by divers, for divers, Scuba Junkie’s Komodo Beach Resort is located on Flores Island, approximately one hour’s boat ride from Labuan Bajo. Situated close to Komodo and Rinca Islands, Scuba Junkie Komodo’s location means that some of Komodo’s best diving is just a stone’s throw away, with plenty of time to experience the best of the location and return with plenty of time to relax after diving.

Located in the quiet and secluded bay of Warloka, the resort has a range of accommodations to suit a range of budgets, from budget backpacker bales to luxurious ensuite rooms, all built using reclaimed wood from the land using traditional Balinese methods of building. The west-facing beach provides incredible sunsets over the Komodo National Park that can be seen from all of the rooms.

TOP DIVES: Also known as ‘fish soup’ by local divers, Batu Bolong (‘hollow rock’) is very typical of Komodo diving: an exposed pinnacle, home to a staggering amount of schooling fish life and subject to very strong currents, but deeply satisfying to dive, just in case you needed to experience something other than regular manta ray sightings.

Voter Comments:

Amazing location, Fantastic staff, beautiful & comfortable boats. A dream holiday for any diver.
– TD, USA

SJ Komodo is the best resort I’ve been to; ignoring the great diving, they have the best service, great boats, good food, well-kept equipment (though I bring my own as a pro), well organized, with high-quality dive and resort staff. Overall an impressive operation – which is why they won this award last year.
– BM, Canada

The Crew is Amazing. It‘s always fun going out on a dive with these guys. It‘s a really nice place to stay
– MR, Germany

Amazing staff and resort with fab diving, win-win!

Volivoli Beach Resort/Ra Divers, Rakiraki, Fiji

www.volivoli.com
dive travel awards 2021 top 10 volivoli beach resort

Volivoli Beach Resort and Ra Divers has received regular nominations for the DIVE Travel Awards, winning a well-deserved Top Three placing in 2020, having previously awarded the accolade of Fiji’s Most Outstanding Dive Operator of 2016. One of Fiji’s longest-running scuba diving establishments, Volivoli Beach Resort originally began life as a backpacker-style guest house for the dive centre, but after being severely damaged by Cyclone Winston in 2016, was rebuilt as a luxury boutique eco-resort from which divers can explore the Bligh Water – known locally as the Vatu-I-Ra Passage – a marine protected area famous for the abundance and diversity of its marine life.

As a family-run business, the dive staff have years of experience with the local dive sites, most of which are no more than 20 minutes by boat from the resort. Topside, Volivoli offers a range of activities including kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding, plus guided tours of the local culture.

TOP DIVES: Fiji is known as the ‘soft coral capital of the World’, one of the best places for shark encounters, and is home to five of the world’s seven turtle species – and plenty more besides. The exposed reefs of Black Magic Mountain and E-6 are some of the best, with large schools of pelagic fish, frequent shark encounters and, of course, luxurious soft coral. Several wrecks are located not far from the resort, including the delightful Papuan Explorer, a 30m-long wreck sitting in 26m of water with a deck rising to 15m and teeming with fish life.

Voter Comments:

Great team with huge experience diving the awesome Bligh Waters area. Never disappointed with dives here.
– AC, Australia

We have stayed here many times over the years and they are just superb. Great service and the rooms are lovely. Our favourite is the Pool Villas. But the best part is that the food is amazing. Exactly what you want after a day’s diving. I’m looking forward to heading back there soon.
