A 56-year-old man from West Valley City, Utah, died following a scuba diving incident at Bear Lake in Northern Utah on 13 June.

Greg Jonas was taking part in a group dive near Cisco Beach as part of his master diver certification when he became unresponsive at depths of around 27-30 metres (90-100ft), according to the Rich County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency services responded to a 911 call at approximately 1.44 pm. Jonas was recovered from the water by fellow divers, received CPR on scene, and was airlifted to Logan Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

‘The Rich County Sheriff’s Office is saddened to report that the diver, Greg Jonas, of West Valley City, Utah, has died as a result of this incident,’ said a police spokesperson.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones and all those affected by this tragic loss.’

Bear Lake, which straddles the Utah-Idaho border at an elevation of about 1,800 metres (5,900ft), is a popular diving destination known for its clear turquoise waters. Its high altitude requires divers to adjust decompression calculations and gas mixes.

Friends described Jonas as a fun, boisterous and enthusiastic diver who was in high spirits on the day of the incident. He was completing what was expected to be his final deep dive for certification.
