A 48-year-old Ukrainian scuba diver has died after getting into difficulty during a dive off Sliema, Malta.
The incident occurred near the Exiles area at approximately 2.20 pm on Saturday, 29 August.
Police officers, medical personnel and members of Malta’s Civil Protection Department attended the scene following a request for assistance. The diver was recovered from the water and brought ashore, but was subsequently pronounced dead.
Police told the Times of Malta that preliminary investigations indicated the man had experienced a medical episode while in the water. The precise cause of his death has not yet been established.
The newspaper reported that the man, who has not been named, had been diving for approximately eight years and was underwater with his wife when the incident occurred. The couple were said to have lived in Malta for around 12 years.
Magistrate Joe Mifsud has opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the diver’s death, and the results of a post-mortem examination are expected to determine the cause.
