A 34-year-old Turkish national has been arrested in the Montenegrin coastal resort of Budva, after allegedly striking a diver with a jet ski and fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, 3 July, off Cape Zavala near Budva’s Slovenska Obala (promenade).
The suspect is alleged to have struck a 41-year-old diver from the Montenegrin capital, Podgorica, before leaving the scene. The injured diver was brought back to the marina before being transported to the Clinical-Hospital Centre in Kotor for further treatment.
He was later discharged and is reported to have suffered only minor injuries.
Officers from the Budva Security Department’s Criminal Police Station launched an investigation and identified the suspect through what the Police Directorate described as ‘intensive operational work on the ground’.
The suspect, a Turkish national identified only as ‘D.A.B.’ was arrested at around 9.30 pm the same day in Budva. The duty prosecutor at the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Kotor was notified immediately and ordered an urgent investigation into the incident.
A spokesperson for the local Police Directorate said: ‘When police officers arrived at the scene, it was determined that the driver of the jet ski had hit the diver while he was diving off Cape Zavala.
‘After the incident, the perpetrator drove away from the scene in the direction of Jaz beach. The injured diver was transported to Marina Budva, where he was taken over by the Emergency Medical Services team, after which he was transported to the Kotor Clinical Hospital Centre for further medical assistance.’
‘Intensive operational work on the ground and the swift actions of the police officers of the Criminal Police Station of the Budva Security Department quickly led to the identification and location of D.A.B. from Turkey,’ added the spokesperson.
‘After establishing all the relevant facts, the competent prosecutor ordered his arrest.’
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.
