A 70-year-old scuba diver has died after suffering a heart attack following a dive at Charco del Palo, a popular dive spot on the eastern coast of the Spanish island of Lanzarote.

Reports that a male diver had collapsed after exiting the water were received at around 1:50pm on the afternoon of Monday, 14 October, according to Lanzarote’s Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

Two ambulances were dispatched to attend to the diver, whose name and nationality have so far not yet been identified, but paramedics were unable to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charco del Palo’s underwater scenery is volcanic in nature, a spread of lava fields and tubes extending into the ocean down to around 30m followed by sandy drop-offs. The area is home to angel sharks and several species of ray.

An investigation has been launched into the diver’s death.
