A 54-year-old German woman has died after getting into difficulty in the waters off Dwejra, on the Maltese island of Gozo.
The alarm was raised at around 12.30 pm after the woman was spotted floating in the water and brought ashore by members of the public.
Local police went to the dive site together with a medical team from the Gozo General Hospital, according to a statement from the Malta Police Force.
A member of the Malta Civil Protection Department was also in attendance, and an Armed Forces Malta (AFM) helicopter was dispatched to the dive site.
Attempts at CPR were made, but they proved unsuccessful, and the woman was declared dead at the scene.
Although the dive site has not been explicitly named by the local media, Dwejra is the location of the collapsed Azure Window, and home to popular dive sites such as the Blue Hole and Inland Sea.
Photographs from the scene indicate the incident occurred in the vicinity of the Blue Hole.
A police investigation has been opened, and Magistrate Simone Grech has launched an inquiry into the woman’s death.
