A French diver in his seventies has died during a recreational dive off Port de la Selva, part of the Cap de Creus Natural Park on Spain’s Costa Brava.
The incident took place near the s’Arenella lighthouse in Alt Empordà, where the diver was part of a group of four who had entered the water as buddy teams at around 12pm.
Partway through the dive, one of the group realised his buddy had stopped moving and started sinking, at which point he immediately surfaced the unresponsive diver and called the emergency services.
Emergency responders from a local clinic and a helicopter from the Catalan Medical Emergency System (SEM) attended the scene, only to find the diver was in cardiac and respiratory arrest.
Paramedics attempted resuscitation for around 30 minutes, but were unable to revive him and confirmed the diver’s death at around 1pm.
The diver’s body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Girona, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil in Girona has announced an investigation into the incident.
