Brookline, Massachusetts-based East Coast Divers is hosting a virtual chat about staying active and diving with age, as part of its efforts to rebuild after the business was devastated by fire earlier this year.
The event, titled ‘Thriving As You Age – in Diving and in Life’, takes place on 20 October, and will bring together diving, medical and safety experts in support of East Coast Divers’ ‘Operation Phoenix’ rebuilding fundraiser.
The conversation will explore how people can continue enjoying the activities they love while recognising that their health, fitness and needs may change over time.
Topics may include longevity, fitness for diving, changing health risks, immersion pulmonary oedema and practical considerations for remaining active in and around the water.
The discussion, which will be moderated by Rick Voight, CEO of photo-imaging software company Vivid-Pix, will bring in perspectives from speakers from the diving, medical and safety communities, including:
- Dan Orr, former President and CEO of the Divers Alert Network (DAN)
- Dr Charlotte Yeh, former Chief Medical Officer of AARP, a non-profit organisation supporting active lifestyles and interests for the over-50s
- Jasmine Gale, MD, a board-certified emergency medicine physician and divemaster who holds diplomas in Mountain Medicine and Diving & Marine Medicine, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine
Attendance is limited to 50 participants to make room for questions and discussion, and the format will give attendees an opportunity to engage directly with the speakers about issues that matter to them.
Tickets are $50 per person, with funds supporting the business in its continued recovery from the devastating fire on 28 May this year, which devastated its Brookline shop.
Throughout the recovery, ECD has continued teaching classes, servicing equipment, organising trips and supporting its diving community.
The company says this event is intended to continue that commitment by creating space for an accessible conversation about health, safety and lifelong participation in diving.
