Oceanic+ v2.0 adds freediving capability to iPhones

Oceanic – which recently launched a new housing to turn iPhones into smart dive computers – has updated the Oceanic+ app to add a freediving mode, meaning the Apple Watch Ultra and iPhone can now be used to track and log apnoea diving.

The new Freediving Mode in Oceanic+ v2.0 adds the ability to customise personal alarms and settings, and track a user’s surface heart rate. Ascent and descent rate visualisations have been added, and a ‘Stealth Mode’ is now available which will disable alarms and dim the screen to allow divers to get closer to marine wildlife.

In addition to the new Freediving Mode, the Photography & Video Mode has been updated to include automatic colour correction for both video and still images in the free version of the app.

Upgrading to the premium version of Oceanic+ enables its advanced editing capabilities, including the ability to adjust blue or green colour dominance, and the use of keyframes to make colour correction consistent throughout videos, including media shot through using other devices.

A new Weight Planner assists divers in determining the correct amount of ballast for their dives, and a Location Planner with Diver-Generated Content enables divers to plan dives using real-time water temperature data.

An ‘Activity Map’ has been added which will display the user’s dives across a global map, with colour-coded indicators displaying the different modes used in any given location.

Photos and videos taken using the Oceanic+ Dive Housing are now seamlessly integrated into dive logs generated through the Oceanic+ 2.0 app, and dives can be easily shared with friends and social media buddies. Divers who might prefer to use a different logbook software can now export their dive data to the preferred application of their choice.

A new iPhone widget has been created for quick access to essential dive information, and the most recent update to Oceanic+ 2.0 also integrates scuba diving into Apple’s Fitness app.

The Oceanic+ dive app works on both the Apple Watch Ultra and iPhones running iOS 16 or later, when used together with the Oceanic+ Dive Housing. The free version of the app comes with basic dive computer capability, and the full suite of functions is unlocked via an annual subscription currently priced at US $9.99 per month or $79.99 annually

Both devices can be used simultaneously with a single subscription to the Oceanic+ 2.0 app, effectively giving divers access to two separate dive computers without having to pay for the app twice.
