Mares launches scuba diving app for Apple Watch Ultra

Mares has launched a new app which will turn the Apple Watch Ultra into a dedicated, fully-featured dive computer.

The concept was first introduced in 2022 when Oceanic launched its dive app for the Apple Watch Ultra, with Mares now taking on the challenge.

The Mares app displays all the relevant dive data and is capable of handling up to 50% enriched air mixtures based around the industry standard Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm.

Features include a built-in compass, digital logbook with dive charts, and GPS tracking for entry and exit points.

Maximum depth is limited to 40m (130ft) by the Apple Watch Ultra rather than the app, and there is, currently, no freediving mode, although Mares says it is working on an update.

Other features include the ability to share dive data between buddies, and local wildlife details are stored in the app for post-dive identification. Unlike the Oceanic app, however, the Mares app doesn’t appear to be compatible with iPhones.

The app is free to download and comes with a three-day trial period, after which usage requires a subscription charged at £8.99 per month ($8.99 for US subscribers or £69.99 yearly ($69.99 in the US).
