Great Shark Snapshot returns for 2024

The Great Shark Snapshot, one of the Shark Trust’s citizen scientist initiatives, in which divers and snorkellers around the world are asked to record the sharks and rays they see is set to return in 2024 between 20 and 28 July.

The event is now in its third year and takes place during the international ‘Shark Month’ of July, and coincides with a series of events that celebrate all things shark and ray. Along with gathering vital scientific data, the event provides a chance to celebrate the incredible shark and ray species of the world.

Divers, clubs, dive centres, charter boats and liveaboards are all encouraged to show their support by organising dives and events throughout the week. Information recorded by participants about the species and numbers of sharks and rays spotted during the week will be added to the charity’s Shark Log – a growing global shark and ray census that will, over time, enable shark scientists to build a picture of species distribution and any changes that occur.

Caroline Robertson-Brown, Marketing Manager at the Shark Trust said, ‘It is great to see this popular citizen science event back for its third year. Whether you are diving your local dive site, or on a trip of a lifetime, we want divers to join in on the Great Shark Snapshot in July.

‘I cannot wait to hear from the divers and dive organisations about the species of sharks and rays that they see. And where in the world they see them.’

To join in the Great Shark Snapshot, record every shark, ray and skate you might see while diving or snorkelling between 20 and 28 July. Photographs and video footage would be greatly appreciated, although not necessary to record a sighting.

Sightings can be recorded on the Shark Trust Shark Log web page, or using the Shark Trust app for Android and Apple devices. Some handy shark ID guides are also available from the Shark Trust website for free download.
