Ghost Fishing UK is seeking pledges from the public and businesses to secure funding in order to continue its work removing abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear from the UK’s waters.
Ghost Fishing UK director Dr Richard Walker said that the team needs ‘robust funding’ to enable them to charter boats at the last minute next year and move recovered lost fishing gear to storage and recycling depots.
The charity has applied for the 2022 Big Give Christmas Challenge, which sees fundraising website Big Give match received donations to double the amount of funding received by the beneficiary. Ghost Fishing UK were named as Big Give ‘champions’ in the 2021 campaign, and hope to build on last year’s success.
In order to benefit from a total matched giving fund of just over £17,000, Ghost Fishing UK needs to secure pledges before 11 September this year. The target is £4,374.50, with a shortfall (at the time of writing) of just under £1000. Should the charity be named a Big Give champion, pledges will be doubled to make the ‘matching pot’ up to £8,749.
Pledges can be made through the Big Give Christmas Challenge Website, with a minimum required donation of £100. Only one donation per person can be made.
