Another Egyptian liveaboard has capsized in the Red Sea off Jabal Al-Zeit, north of Hurghada, with six crew members on board.

According to local reports, the boat was travelling from Port Rashid on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, where it had been undergoing maintenance, when it capsized in rough weather on Thursday afternoon.

Initially described in local media as a ‘ tourist boat’, the vessel has since been identified as the MV Triton, which – according to the Triton website – is a 2024-built liveaboard.

It’s not clear if Triton was a brand-new boat or a previously operational vessel that had been in Rashid for repairs or modifications.

The crew members were rescued by search and rescue teams from the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (Gapco), which dispatched patrols after being alerted to a distress signal received by Red Sea Governorate authorities.

Four men were reportedly rescued quite swiftly and the remaining two located after an extended search operation.

The incident occurred on the same day that the UK Government issued a safety warning over Egyptian dive boats following the Sea Story disaster, and marks the eighth Egyptian Red Sea liveaboard to be lost in just two years.

This article has been updated to reflect new information regarding the name of the vessel.
