Dive operators in Curaçao are calling for the island’s authorities to adopt the Green Fins eco-tourism program nationwide. The sustainable diving, snorkelling and watersports initiative, created by the Reef-World Foundation under the auspices of the UN Environment Program has already been adopted by a number of Curaçao’s top dive operators.

Located in the southern Caribbean, Curaçao boasts some of the most pristine and diverse coral reefs in the entire Caribbean region, and its marine tourism has grown significantly over the last decade. As a result, dive operators are committing themselves to environmental sustainability initiatives, both to ensure the preservation of one of the island’s natural treasures, and also to accommodate the growing international demand for eco-tourism.

Marine tourism plays an important role in Curaçao’s economy, and as the industry grows, it is critical to establish practical approaches to protect the marine environment,’ said JJ Harvey, Director at The Reef-World Foundation. ‘By adopting Green Fins, dive operators are taking vital steps in ensuring Curaçao’s dive market is sustainably managed to increase corals and marine life’s resilience to wider global threats and protect the valuable marine ecosystems for future generations.’

Adding to the call for Green Fins to be made a national program is Sandals Resorts International’s recent decision to adopt Green Fins across all of its Caribbean resorts – including  Royal Sandals Curaçao. Sandals, globally the largest all-inclusive PADI 5 Star resort brand, joins Coral Divers, The Dive BusGo West DivingBlue Bay Dive and Watersports and Ocean Encounters – five of the ten dive centres to so far adopt Green Fins as digital members.

‘Curaçao stands at a crossroads where it can pioneer sustainable marine tourism,’ said Bryan Horne, founder of dive travel specialist, Dive Curaçao ‘By doing so, it can set an example for other destinations around the world. The momentum gained from the commitment of local dive shops and the endorsement of Sandals Resorts International signals a unique opportunity to establish a National Green Fins Program.

The call to action for Curaçao is clear. Curaçao can recognize that a National Green Fins Program not only safeguards its natural heritage but also elevates its global standing. By embracing this initiative, Curaçao can reshape its image as a responsible and eco-conscious destination. Furthermore, the economic benefits, coupled with the preservation of its marine ecosystems, underscore the program’s potential to enhance the overall well-being of the island.’
