Canadian dive computer specialist, Shearwater Research Inc, has announced the launch of its new Peregrine dive computer, a ‘simple and accessible’, full colour, multi-gas dive computer designed to be easy to use for divers of all experience levels.

The Peregrine marks Shearwater’s first foray into a more recreational-oriented dive computer ‘for everyday diving’, as opposed to its popular Perdix and Teric (and previously Predator and Petrel) computers, very much targeted at closed-circuit rebreather and technical divers. While the more advanced technical features have been removed, the Peregrine’s three gas nitrox mode allows the use of up to 100 per cent O2, with full decompression support.

Four diving modes – Air, Nitrox, 3 Gas Nitrox and Gauge – are available, using a Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with gradient factors.

The Peregrine is depth-rated to 120m (394ft), with other features including a quick-dive planner, no lockout for dive plan deviations, CNS tracking, wireless charging with up to 30 hours of dive time per charge, 200 hours of dive log memory, vibration alerts and Bluetooth connectivity to the Shearwater Cloud, allowing dive data to be shared using the free-to-download iOS/Android and Windows app.

The 5.59cm (2.2″) 320×240 full-colour LCD display is the same as that of the Perdix, and is user-customisable with the same two-button menu control as the Teric.

‘While a Shearwater [dive computer] at a lower price is a great concept, cost reductions could not sacrifice Shearwater’s reputation. A fantastic screen, high robustness, and simple usability were non-negotiable,’ said Tyler Coen, director of engineering at Shearwater. ‘Some advanced features such as technical modes, the digital compass, and air integration were removed, but the fundamental Shearwater experience remains. Firmware is based on the Perdix recreational 3-gas nitrox mode, further adding to that an even simpler single gas mode. A gauge mode is included, making the Peregrine a great backup for those advancing on to technical diving. While the Peregrine’s price may grab attention, a quality diving experience was our focus throughout the design process. ”

The Peregrine is retailing at US$450 plus taxes and is currently available for £432 (including VAT) in the UK. Dealers can be located via the Shearwater Dealer Locator.
